I was photo editor and then editor of the Aberystwyth University student paper, the Courier, and during this time managed to acquire an Honours degree in Physics. Since that time, I have worked as a freelance photographer, part-time or full-time, in parallel with teaching. I have lived and worked in England, the Middle East, New Zealand and, most recently, Scotland.

I have experience in Editorial, Industrial, Studio, Film Location, Actor Headshot, Fashion, Wedding, Function, Product, Corporate and Hazardous Location Photography, and am equipped for digital photography and film photography using formats up to 8 x 10 inches, and have portable studio lighting equipment. I was co-opted by National Geographic to film the interior of the Majlis al Djinn cave in Oman for a film on the Geology of Oman. The camera team had baulked at the 150m free abseil into the cave. I am a BS-AC First Class Diver, and underwater photographer. I have completed a Mountain Leader course and have photographed extensively in wilderness terrain. I am the official photographer of the Dundee Literary Festival.

A testimonial from R. Buckminster Fuller, whom I photographed in Los Angeles, inscribed in a copy of one of his books for me:

To : Alan Hillyer
Whose perspicacity (misspelled and corrected) is such as not only to comprehend my having trouble to spell that word, but also to enjoy my struggling with it. Alan Hillyer is a charmer, as a scientist, as an artist and whole human being. Buckminster Fuller.
To : Alan Hillyer
With great pleasure in knowing him for a brief but rich moment.
